Initially based on the Interpersonal Process Recall (IPR) method of Dr. Norman Kagan, the course was modified in 1981 to incorporate the CoView, an automated computerized audio­video system which I developed from my research.

Research Activities

Research interests

Face­to­face interaction. Over the past 12 years I have developed a procedure called CoView. (Previous names for this procedure include ITT Interpersonal Tracking Task and MAGIE, Minnesota Automated Guided Interaction Enhancement). CoView is a computer assisted video tape tool for assessing face­to­face interactions. Development has progressed from the basic research stage to pilot applications in education and relationship therapies. In order to ensure continued development, the stage of commercial marketing began in 1982, when Mr. Stewart Haight and I started Health Information Resources, Inc.

Impact of video tape feedback for psychiatric patients. Research projects began in 1982 and are continuing through 1986 at United Hospitals in St. Paul.

Speak Out and Share (1976) Directed, filmed, scripted, edited this film for Intercultural Student Experiences, Minnetonka, Minnesota with assistance from the Department of Media Resources, of the University of Minnesota. This film documents activities of four European high school students in their visits with their American host families. It was released in four separate language versions (Spanish, French, German, English) for showing in Europe to inform students and parents about the experience of seeing America firsthand through close contact with American families. (25 minutes, color)

A Psychology of Intoxication (1975) A lecture by John Brantner, Ph.D. on psychological aspects of intoxication. It was filmed and edited for the producer, the Health Professionals Drug Abuse Education Project at the University of Minnesota (45 min)

Help: A Study of People in Progress (1973) Directed, partly filmed, scripted, and edited this film which was co­produced by the Departments of Psychology and Media Resources, University of Minnesota. This film presents four intertwined yet different stories of people in emotional distress and the attempts of others to assist them, presenting a multi­faceted view of the helping process. Another version of this film, 4 Studies presents the stories separately. (25 minutes)

Dare to Share (1973) Directed, filmed, scripted, and edited this film which was produced by Intercultural Student Experiences, Minnetonka, Minnesota with assistance from the Department of Media Resources, University of Minnesota. This film depicts activities of American high school students in France, Germany, and Spain during their two­week linguistic and cultural learning experiences.
