Volunteering:

Who can Volunteer as Counselors or Supervisors:
Counselors: Psychologists, clinical social workers, psychiatric nurses, psychiatrists, advanced standing graduate students with the necessary skills.

Qualifications for Counselors & Supervisors:
Minimally must have supervised experience in counseling or psychotherapy, license in good standing, no criminal convictions, and pass through WICC's application process. It is critical that their schedule permits a committment to a regular evening or afternoon team, and that they can be consistently involved.  In addition,   Supervisors must have the experience required of counselors, and also have supervisory experience or complete WICC's Supervisory Training Program.

Benefits: Collegial consultation; training opportunities; ability to provide service to those who otherwise would not receive it; team work with other professionals; eternal salvation (conditional)

Receptionists:
Adults of all ages interested in psychology or social work with a desire to work with or assist mental health professionals in providing counseling services to people in need. Some background in psychology is helpful. Commitment to community service and reliability are essential. Examples of people who volunteer as receptionists include undergraduates in psychology or social work, those considering a career transition into the mental health field, first year graduate students, retirees and others dedicated to providing mental health services. As with counselors and supervisors, it is critical that they can commit to a given evening or afternoon team, and that they can be consistently involved.

Qualifications for Receptionists:
Receptionists: good interpersonal skills, empathy, good judgment, attention to paperwork and detail, and the ability to function as part of a team.

Benefits: The opportunity to be involved in your community, to learn about counseling and therapy, access to library materials on mental health topics, free registration at WICC workshops, contact with professionals in the mental health field and a chance to expand your knowledge of available community resources.

Commitment for all volunteers:
The minimum commitment is service on a team for one (4-hour) shift per week for 13 weeks. But, WICC asks for a six month commitment and is hoping for a year of service given the work necessary to screen and orient volunteers, and the reality that it takes months to become fully settled into the role. Counselors also have responsibility to followup with clients by phone when necessary and arrange for appointments during intervening weeks..
